Lorraine Cutier Bauer Romeiro was conditionally discharged from prison following a judicial ruling on Tuesday, 13th December.

The conditions of her release include regular court appearances, a ban on frequenting specified areas, and observing a night curfew.

A court had sentenced 19-year-old Lorraine to five years in a closed prison for drug trafficking, despite her protesting her innocence, in April.

At the time of her trial, she was also responding to a charge of belonging to a criminal organisation.

Lorraine had been arrested in an area of Sao Paulo known as Cracolandia, or Crackland – because of its widespread drug dealing and public drug use – in June 2021.

A strip-search revealed she had crack cocaine hidden in her knickers and cannabis hidden in her bra.

Following her arrest, she was released from custody and placed under house arrest because she had a young daughter.

But the decision was reversed when she failed to comply with the conditions of her home detention, and she was remanded in custody.

She and 21 others were also charged with belonging to a criminal organisation after Civil Police filmed and photographed them allegedly selling drugs in Cracolandia.

Among the accused was Lorraine’s boyfriend, Andre Luis Santos Almeida, who goes by the alias China.

The two were arrested – Lorraine’s second arrest – at China’s home in neighbouring Barueri in July 2021.

Inside the residence, officers found crack cocaine, cannabis, ecstasy, and ether spray.

Following her second arrest, her brother took to social media to say that Lorraine had “fallen in with the wrong crowd”.

She is believed to have been affected when her father was shot dead during an attempted robbery in 2014.

Lawyer Patricia Carvalho said: “My client has always alleged that when she was stopped, she only had a set of keys and a cigarette lighter on her, nothing else.”
