This is the moment a schoolboy is left seeing stars after sticking his head out of the sunroof of his dad’s van and walloping his forehead off an overhead bar causing it to shake.

Footage from the town of Xiepu in Ningbo City in East China’s Zhejiang Province shows the curious boy poking his head out of the black Mercedes-Benz van driven by his dad, Mr Lei.

He and his sister were on their way home from Xiepu Central Elementary School when the accident happened.

In the traffic camera video, Mr Lei can be seen stopping the van to let another vehicle pass, and he does not realise his son is standing in the sunroof as he approaches the vehicle height bar.

The metal bar, restricting vehicles to a height of 2.2 metres (7 feet) also goes unnoticed by the boy himself, who fails to duck in time.

He hits his head against the bar and jolts backwards, shattering his dad’s glass sunroof too.

The video ends with Mr Lei rubbing his son’s smarting forehead, with images showing the boy later treated with a thick bandage.

Xiepu Town traffic policeman Jin Senyin said: “The vehicle height bar is set at 2.2 metres, and Mr Lei’s van is slightly higher than regular cars. That’s why the boy hit it.”

Mr Lei’s son, who suffered no serious injuries, said: “My sister opened the sunroof and I climbed out. I didn’t see the bar.”
