A 16-year-old girl has reportedly stabbed her newborn baby with scissors while trying to cut the umbilical cord after giving birth in secret at home.

The incident took place in the town of San Cristobal de Segovia, in the Spanish region of Castile and Leon, on the morning of Friday, 8th April.

According to reports, the teen mother hid her pregnancy from loved ones and gave birth in the bathroom while home alone.

Without any assistance, she tried to cut the umbilical cord with a pair of scissors, but she reportedly stabbed her baby in the abdomen and chest.

The newborn was admitted to the University Clinical Hospital of Valladolid, which lies around one hour and 15 minutes from San Cristobal de Segovia by car.

The teen’s mother was also examined after arriving in a state of shock, according to local media.

Local authorities have opened an investigation into the incident and are currently trying to establish the exact circumstances behind the teen’s pregnancy and injuries to the newborn.

The police said the injuries appear to have been caused when the young mother cut the umbilical cord herself with a pair of scissors. However, the investigation is currently ongoing.
