Italian cops have charged a woman with involuntary manslaughter after her baby allegedly banged its head when she gave birth not realising she was pregnant.

The woman, who is reportedly of Swedish origin but who lives in Italy, told the police the baby banged its head when it was being born, and that she had been unaware that she was pregnant.

She said that the umbilical cord was still attached when the baby fell onto the floor and banged its head. Her mother had then come into the room, seen the baby on the floor and wrapped it in a towel before calling an ambulance.

Medics then collected the woman, aged 30, and her injured baby from the home in Acilia, a neighbourhood and a frazione of Rome in central-western Italy.

The baby was still alive when hospitalised at the Bambino Gesu Hospital but it died two days later.

Medics had initially suggested that the blow to the head might have come from a blow from an object but attempted murder charges have now been changed to involuntary manslaughter as police investigate the tragic death.

Local media said the suspect, who has not been named, is currently being held under house arrest and will attend court later this week.
