Dani Alves has called Neymar a “sensitive boy” and told the Paris Saint-Germain star “take a stand” saying “people need to learn how to respect” him.

Sao Paulo defender Alves, 36, made the comments in an interview with Brazilian TV show “Grande Circulo” broadcast by Sportv where he addressed several issues concerning Neymar including a conversation they had at the last World Cup.

Alves started by assuring the two have a good relationship saying: “I always give Ney advice. I think, and I tell him, that he has a responsibility with a lot of people. In my opinion, he should take a stand. He knows what I think.”

Alves assured he has “spoken to him many times” saying he “had a responsibility from the moment he became a reference to children and other athletes”. Alves went on to say when a player “starts to get those responsibilities, he cannot disappoint and has to face up to them.”

Alves also addressed a conversation the two had during the last World Cup in Russia where Alves told the forward to “take a stand after the World Cup” saying “I told him that because he is our flag in the Brazilian squad.

“He is the most important player in Brazil and one of the most important in the world. He has to take a stand because he is in a position where people need to understand who Ney really is and how he thinks so they can start to respect Neymar.”

Alves went on to say: “Sometimes he steps back to not offend anyone. Despite what everyone thinks, Ney is a boy. He is a very sensitive person.

“Ney is affected by a lot of things which many times are not fair”.

The defender finished by explaining: “That is why he needs to take a stand because when something is said about him that is not right you have to show your face. People need to learn to respect Neymar.”
