These images show a Mexican lagoon which has mysteriously turned bright pink leaving local authorities baffled.

The lagoon is located in the village of Chichimequillas located in the municipality of Fresnillo in the Mexican state of Zacatecas located in the centre of the country and measures around 500 square metres (5,381 square feet).

Locals found the lagoon had turned bright pink earlier this week and Civil Protection agents then closed off the area as they investigate the cause of the drastic colour-change, however, the reason remains unknown.

The pictures show masked authorities collect samples of the pink water in buckets. The images also show agents conducting tests on the site while others collect photographic evidence.

Local media report the exact cause remains unknown, however, initial testing has shown that compounds used to create gunpowder were found in the water.

Other reports show the presence of bacteria which has lead investigators to consider it could be a natural phenomenon but further testing is required to find the cause and see if the water is harmful to humans.

Residents around 40 kilometres (24 miles) from Fresnillo reportedly heard loud noises coming from the area but it remains unclear what the noise was or if it was related to the pink lagoon.

The investigation is ongoing.
