A newborn baby has tragically died after being abandoned next to a nest of ants which injured her so badly that she later died.

The incident took place in the Heroes de Leon colony in the city of Leon in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato where the baby was still alive when she was found and rescued by members of the local Public Security force.

It is unclear if the ants were poisonous and defending themselves, or if they had been attempting to eat the child.

Local newspaper Milenio report the newborn was found in green clothing wrapped in a yellow blanket and prosecutors found her condition was serious because of the many ant bites to “different parts of her body”.

The Secretariat of Public Security wrote on Twitter that the girl was attended to by paramedics who did not find any signs of the baby having suffered violence, but she later died after being taken to hospital.

It is currently unclear who abandoned her.

An unnamed neighbour told Milenio: “We have just been told, we do not understand how there can be people out there who are so inhumane.

“This is a very quiet area, we have never had strange things or fights in the area, it is a very peaceful place.”

The general prosecution of the state is investigating the case. So far no arrests have been made.
