This is the moment doctors find a two-inch splinter inside the body of this young girl who could not walk straight because of a pain in her hip.

Zheng Yining, seven, who lives with her grandparents while her mum and dad work in another city, is from the county of Baiquan in China’s north-eastern province of Heilongjiang.

After being taken to a local hospital, doctors thought she may have had appendicitis; however, she failed to respond positively to several days of treatment.

Her father, Mr Zheng, said Yining has developmental delay and is still unable to speak more than a few words.

The dad said: “She said her abdomen hurt and she couldn’t stand up straight.

“Her grandparents took her to hospital and they all thought she had appendicitis, but the treatment didn’t work.”

Her parents took her to Harbin Children’s Hospital in the provincial capital, and doctors discovered the two-inch-long foreign body resting on the left side of her abdomen.

Doctor Wang Wensheng said: “A CT scan of her pelvic cavity showed what appeared to be a white mark.

“Because the child could not express herself, and her family didn’t know what it was either, it was unclear how it ended up in her body.

“The area had become inflamed, so it was hard to determine whether it was inside her bladder, abdominal cavity or uterus.”

Yining underwent an operation on 23rd November, with medics finding the toothpick-like splinter in her hip.

Mr Zheng later revealed the piece of wood was of the same material as their television cabinet, which Yining likes to climb.

He believes it pierced his daughter’s skin while she was climbing up and down the furniture.

Yining was in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
