His body was found with his diving gear on and there were no signs of violence, according to local media.

The 60-year-old Brit’s diving pals were at the scene when the local authorities arrived.

The group reportedly told police that they had been diving in Talay Songhong, which has clear waters and stunning underwater caves, when the tragic incident took place.

According to local media, Smith had been exploring an area about 100 metres from the rest of the group when they realised he had been under the water for a long time.

After a while, Smith’s oxygen tank emerged on the surface and the elderly diver was floating just beneath it, according to reports.

The group then alerted local residents who called the emergency services.

Smith’s body has been sent for an autopsy and the cause of death is currently unknown.

The police suggested that he may have become exhausted or suffered from a medical condition while diving.

The investigation is ongoing.
