The authorities conducted a search at the site where 17 bags of human bones were uncovered over two days.

They have since cordoned off the area for investigations to continue.

It is hoped that DNA testing will be able to identify the deceased, whose sexes and ages are currently unknown.

It is not clear how many dead people are amongst the bags of remains.

According to the authorities, there has been a worrying surge in the number of clandestine graves found in the state of Guanajuato.

Acambaro mayor Alejandro Tirado Zuniga said: “In many state municipalities, including Acambaro, there have been reports of missing persons for years, and hopefully the Search Commission will help clarify many pending cases.”

However, the mayor also admitted that when it comes to the large number of missing persons in the state, we are just seeing “the tip of the iceberg”.

The investigation continues.
