Turkish football fans are claiming they blitzed Austria out of the EURO2024 tournament by bombarding the team hotel with fireworks the night before the match.

Many pundits were surprised then unfancied Turkey beat Austria 2-1 on 2nd July to get through to the quarter-finals.

Now a video posted on X by a group of fans calling themselves ‘Hooligans.cz Official’ might show the reason for Austria lacklustre performance.

In the footage a barrage of display-level fireworks is seen being set off right at 2am right outside the Westin Leipzig Hotel, in Leipzig, Germany, where the Austrian national team was staying.

As they explode in a series of ear-splitting explosions the bombshells light up the night as they soar up the hotel’s entire 27 stories.

A caption said: “Ultras Gala, Turkey, Monday night in front of the hotel of the Austrian national team to make noise and not let them sleep.”

Austria’s manager Ralf Dietrich Rangnick, 66, tried to dismiss the disturbance before the match.

He said: “These are all things that are there to fill newspaper reports. They are also exciting to read, but what is important is what happens on the pitch.

“I am incredibly happy that we are here, also for the guys who have made their contribution here for many years.

“I hope that the Austria fans and also many Leipzig fans, who hopefully have tickets, will support us actively.”

Meanwhile, the clip racked up more than 177,000 views on X infuriating many fans.

One X user ‘@zmateny_bimbi’ said: “Average Turkey fan unsportmanship.”

Then ‘@Monika_Tabe’ commented: “Very unsportsmanlike… If you resort to such methods – are you extremely scared and performing poorly yourself?”

And ‘@OzRyann’ added: “What a shame not fair.”
