A young Italian man has died after he was strangled to death in the middle of the street by a Tunisian immigrant.
The incident happened when 28-year-old Cubaa Bilel choked the young Italian man for seven minutes from 3:52am to 3:59am according to security cameras that filmed the attack in the Italian city of Milan on 13th September.
The officers found the victim unconscious and still being throttled by the attacker, and after pushing him away and performing cardiac massage, they took him to hospital in a critical condition.
The 23-year-old victim, Yuri Urizio, died two days after the incident, on 15th September.
Bilel, who only released the victim when police came, told the authorities that he was protecting a girl from robbery.
The suspect said the victim had been stealing money from a Ukrainian woman who usually begs in the area.
However, security cameras did not show that the robbery happened, nor did a woman report the robbery to police, according to local media.
Bilel has since been arrested and is expected to be charged either with voluntary or unintentional homicide.
The mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, said: “It is a tragedy that we can only be saddened by and aware that we must do more.
“I am trying to prepare some measures, some working hypotheses to strengthen security.”
Sala added: “We must feel responsibility. Faced with this situation, we must intensify our commitment.”
The investigation is ongoing.
