This video seen over a million times shows a woman chatting on her mobile when a shirtless man walks past and punches her hard in the face sending her reeling backwards.

The seemingly random attack happened on the streets of Huangjiang Town, which is in Dongguan City in China’s southern Guangdong Province.

CCTV footage dated 19th July shows the victim, Ms Zhang, standing on the pavement beside Huangjiang Avenue when the shirtless man, surnamed Li, strolls towards her from behind.

Li sees Ms Zhang speaking on the phone and – unprovoked – raises his right arm and punches the woman in the side of the face at 2:55pm local time.

The attack stuns Ms Zhang and sends her reeling into the entrance of the Postal Savings Bank of China where she had been running an errand.

Li, meanwhile, casually walks away at the same pace, the video shows.

Huangjiang police said they tracked the suspect down and detained him roughly two hours later.

They described him as a vagrant with no permanent residential address and no family members in the city of Dongguan.

Ms Zhang suffered no serious injuries and reportedly pressed no charges.

Li received no punishment for the offence but was sent to Dongguan Xinyong Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. The motive for his unprovoked attack on Ms Zhang is currently unclear.
