This woman has been rescued after becoming lost one of Europe’s densest forests for a month only to find out her secret lover had killed himself in front of his wife because he thought she was dead.

Mirjana Vidakovic was found alone in a forest outside the city of Prnjavor in Republika Srpska, one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from where she lived.

Republika Srpska is one of the most forested areas in Europe, with over 50 percent of its overall area consisting of woodland.

She was reported as missing in mid-September, and after a search proved unsuccessful her distraught partner killed himself, according to local media.

Reports said Vidakovic was found by a wild-boar hunter in a confused state and extremely dehydrated.

When the hunter asked her what she was doing, Vidakovic replied she was picking berries to make jam but became lost and spent the next month wandering around the forest.

She had reportedly been surviving on water and on rose hip berries.

According to local media, Vidakovic’s husband died in January this year and she started seeing the best man at their wedding, 55-year-old Miro Bojanic, shortly afterwards.

Reports said there were rumours among local residents that Bojanic , who was married to another woman during his affair with Vidakovic, was somehow involved in his lover’s sudden disappearance.

However, he was cleared of all allegations after a police investigation and was never arrested.

According to local media, when the police stopped searching for his mistress, they told him that Vidakovic had probably left town voluntarily. Overcome with sadness, Bojanic reportedly hanged himself from a tree in front of his wife.

Before reportedly killing himself, Bojanic told friends that he loved Vidakovic very much, and it is believed he could not cope with living without his mistress.

According to local media, he did not leave a suicide note behind.

Meanwhile, Vidakovic has been taken to the University Clinical Centre of the Republika Srpska for medical tests and a psychiatric evaluation.
