A young Austrian woman is facing partial lip amputation after a botched beauty treatment by a fake doctor left her with ‘duck lips’.

The 22-year-old woman from the Austrian capital Vienna, whose name was not reported by local media, faces the partial amputation of the upper lip after the botched enlargement treatment.

Dr Nataliya Miraval, who owns a private practice for aesthetic medicine in Vienna, explained the case to the news site Heute: “During an injection with hyaluronic acid, an artery was hit. The woman first received emergency medical care and then had to undergo plastic surgery.”

She added: “Now she is even threatened with a partial amputation of the upper lip which may result in a swallowing disorder.”

In addition, the procedure, which left the young woman with a ‘duck face’, was performed by an unlicensed practitioner who was also not named.

Dr Miraval said that the pandemic caused a real boom in illegal beauty treatment, adding: “Women who come to my office after a botched procedure often have severe swelling or rashes on their face for months because they were treated with non-certified products in private homes.”

The specialist, who said these cheap beauty interventions are mostly offered on Instagram, said: “A patient was injected with botox in a kitchen while there was soup simmering on the stove. That contradicts all hygienic requirements.”

Local media said a similar incident took place in 2019 when an influencer from the German city of Bochum was jailed for pretending to be a naturopath and causing injuries that sometimes had fatal consequences.

Another 40-year-old woman who also carried out botox and hyaluronic treatments in Berlin received a suspended sentence for causing inflammation, bruises, swelling, and redness in patients without having the appropriate qualifications.

Dr Miraval warned: “That can be life threatening. Only trained doctors are allowed to inject botox.”

It is currently unclear if the person who did the botched plastic surgery operation has been arrested.
