Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman has been “fully cleared” of Russian forces, in a move that the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom has described as strategically crucial.

President Zelensky’s announcement comes one day after the Kremlin admitted that its troops had pulled out of the city after nearly being completely encircled by Ukrainian forces.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has said that its Air Force has carried out four strikes that hit two stockpiles of Russian weaponry and two anti-aircraft missile systems. Ukrainian forces also reportedly shot down eight Iranian-made kamikaze drones on Sunday.

The Secretary of Defense of the United States, Lloyd Austin, has said that he thinks Ukraine is “making progress” in the war. He said that Ukraine’s successes in the war could be attributed to the calibre of their soldiers and to the use of weaponry provided by the United States and other NATO countries.

The leaders of nine NATO countries in Europe released a joint statement on Sunday tacitly supporting Ukraine joining the defensive alliance.

The move comes after Ukraine applied for fast-track membership to join NATO following Russia’s announcement that it was annexing four regions in eastern Ukraine in a blatant violation of international law.

While approval is needed from all 30 members of the NATO alliance for a new country to join, the announcement from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Poland and Slovakia represents a significant shift.

The annexation by Russia of four territories in Ukraine has been deemed lawful by Russia’s Constitutional Court.

The Nord Stream gas pipeline leaks have now reportedly stopped, according to Denmark’s energy agency. Leaders in the United States and Europe have suggested that explosions that caused the pipelines to rupture last week were an act of sabotage but they fell short of accusing Russia directly.
