US Man, 51, Kills Self In Bali And Asks To Be Cremated In Monkey Forest In Note

A 51-year-old American man has requested in a note that his ashes be scattered in a monkey forest after allegedly killing himself in Bali.

The body of the American citizen, named as Robert Paul Evans, was found hanging from a tree near the town of Ubud on the Indonesian island of Bali on 18th October.

His body was found by two workers at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, also known as the Ubud Monkey Forest, while they were checking on the area’s crab-eating macaques.

According to the news site Tribun Bali, the rangers were passing by a residential garden when they came across the man’s body hanging from a tree by plastic rope.

The sanctuary workers then reported the incident to the local authorities.

The police said they suspect Evans’ death was suicide, however investigations are ongoing.

Two notes were found in the hotel room where the American man was staying, according to local reports.

His body was taken to Bali’s Sanglah General Hospital. Following an examination, forensic experts believe the victim killed himself at least two days before being found.

The Ubud police said in a statement: “The cause of the victim’s death is not yet known for certain. However it’s suspected that the victim had depression due to multiple sclerosis, according to the management at Tegal Sari Hotel where the victim was staying.

“Therefore, the victim was desperate to end his life by hanging himself. The victim had previously said his intention of ending his life.”

At the American man’s hotel room, the police found two notes believed to have been penned by him prior to ending his own life.

In the notes, he reportedly expressed this wish to be “cremated in Monkey Forest”, and asked hotel staff if they could post several letters for him as well as informing them where his passport was.

Evans also informed hotel staff to donate his Bluetooth speaker and clothes.
