A mother in Brazil has given birth to twins, one of whom was born inside the amniotic sac, an extremely rare event that occurs in just one in 80,000 births.

Twins Brayan and Emanuel were born in hospital in the southern Brazilian city of Criciuma on 5 November.

Often in twin births, a caesarian section is carried out and the amniotic sac is broken.

However, mother Keila Barbon Henrique gave birth vaginally with Emanuel still inside the liquid-filled amniotic sac when he was born.

Brayan was born weighing 2.546 kilogrammes (5.613 lbs) and measuring 44 centimetres (17.3 inches).

Emanuel, who is the younger twin by nine minutes, was removed from the transparent membranes by the medical team. He was born weighing 2.346 kilogrammes (5.172 lbs) and measuring 44.5 centimetres (17.5 inches).

Despite being extremely rare, such births are not dangerous, and the mother and twins are doing well, according to doctors at the hospital.

Keila and the baby’s father, Gilmar Concatto da Silva, live in the neighbouring municipality of Forquilhinha.
