An eight-year-old girl has died from asphyxiation after the rope from the swing she was playing on got wrapped around her neck.

The tragic accident took place in the Brazilian municipality of Cascavel on the afternoon of 15th February.

According to her family, Gabriele da Rosa Iankoski was playing on her own on the swing in the courtyard of her grandmother’s house in a rural part of the municipality when the accident happened.

When her grandmother went to check up on her, she found the youngster unconscious on the ground next to the swing.

Family members rushed her to a service station on the BR-277 motorway where they requested help.

The girl was taken by helicopter to the Western Parana State University Hospital. She suffered three cardiac arrests and was revived by the medical team attending to her. However, she passed away in hospital later that night.

Her cause of death was recorded as asphyxiation. As it was deemed an accident, the incident will not be investigated by the authorities.

Gabriele’s grieving father, Vagner Iankoski, told local media: “She was a very happy and outgoing child and had an iron constitution.”

According to her family, Gabriele wanted to be a police officer. Her funeral took place on 16th February.
