The nine-month-old baby who was rescued after being caught in a deadly landslide is recovering after being diagnosed as suffering from a brain haemorrhage, with his grandmother saying his survival is a “miracle”.

The tot, identified as Dilan Matias Jaimez, was reported missing after a major landslide hit the area known as El Guamo Grande, in the municipality of Piedecuesta, in the northeastern Colombian department of Santander.

Locals began searching for those missing and farmer Jose Daniel Jaimes found the baby 500 metres from where the landslide first hit.

The tot was taken to hospital and Daladier Cabrera Rodriguez, the Director of the clinic where the baby is being attended along with his father, said that he is in a stable condition but needs the supervision of the doctors as he suffered a minor brain haemmorhage.

His father, named Fabian Andres, was visited by the Governor of Santander, Mauricio Aguilar, who highlighted the bravery of the boy.

The tot’s mother Ingrid Hernandez and her other two children, aged five and two years old, are still missing and father Andres told reporters: “It is a hard moment but people have shown great solidarity. At the moment there is a lot of sadness for the rest of my family as they have not been found yet, but I do know that we will find them”.

The tot’s grandmother, and mother to the missing Ingrid, who has not been named, is helping dig through the mud to find those missing and said that Dilan “is a miracle, my God knows why he left me my baby, maybe in case my daughter does not appear”.

She talked about the landslide which was caused by heavy rains which saw the Manco river overflow and left at least five people dead, saying: “Andres felt the water was going up in the house and tried to open the door, but it was blocked by wood being taken by the current.

“As he was unable to open the door, he took the three kids and put them on the chest of drawers which was tall. He does not remember much more, only that he felt the hit (of the landslide), the house being dragged by the river, and he tried to get out of the water”.

The father was dragged for at least a kilometre by the current, the grandmother said. He managed to get out of the current and started searching for his family before being reunited with his son.

The authorities are continuing to search for six missing people, including the family of the rescued baby.
