This is the moment a speeding police car in Chile knocks a pedestrian flying and then carries on its way in what appears to be a hit-and-run incident and is now being investigated.

The shocking scene was recorded by an onlooker in the Chilean capital Santiago in central Chile and gunshots can be heard after the pedestrian was hit.

In the clip, a man who has not been named in reports can be seen running across a road when a police car comes speeding in to view.

The man tries to run in front of it but cannot make it to the pavement in time and the bonnet of the car crashes into him.

He is sent somersaulting through the air as the patrol car can be seen braking as it reaches other police vehicles in the street.

Gunshots can then be heard ringing out and the social media user who uploaded the clip wrote in the caption: “In Diagonal Paraguay with Vicuna Mackenna a man was run over and police started to shoot! Pigs!”

The incident reportedly happened during a police operation to contain a protest that was taking place that evening in the Chilean capital.

The General Director of the Chilean National Police, Mario Rozas, told local media: “Every time we have found out about a police abuse case, we have been the most interested in clearing it up. We have checked social media and we have found several situations that are suspicious. We have reported them to the Public Ministry and we have started the procedures to investigate them.”

According to local media, The National General Attorney’s Office is investigating the deaths of 23 people in the context of the state of emergency declared by the National Government because of the protests in the country against the government of Sebastian Pinera.

The condition of the victim who was run over is unclear.
