A top journalist in Germany has made the brave decision to comes out as a transgender woman in a bid to encourage others to do the same.

Georgine Kellermann has been known for years to viewers on WDR as Georg Kellermann after coming out as transgender at the age of 62.

The former correspondent in both Washington and Paris who later became a studio boss in Bonn, Duisburg and then Essen with WDR said she always felt as if she was born in the wrong body.

Georgine Kellermann has now decided to live in public as in private with a late coming out at the age of 62 and says she feels delighted by the decision.

Speaking about the decision which she had put off for so long she said: “I always hid my real self. I used to never go to the opera, never went to see plays or went to the theatre because I never trusted to go there as a woman. Now I realise what I’ve missed in my life, and that will never happen again.”

She said she had been worried that people would laugh and “question my credibility”. But she added that it was all about being true to herself and she had noticed ever since she was a teenager that she was in the wrong body.

She said: “I knew early on that I was different.”

Only her closest friends and family knew and she always kept it hidden at work. She even used to wear women’s shoes to work but changed them in the car park.

Only in September last year while on holiday in America did she finally feel free to be herself and has now appeared as her real self in public and on camera in Germany.

She said she also wanted to encourage others to do the same, saying: “I still have a lot of catching up to do. If someone has a problem with me, that’s their problem. I hope that I can also encourage others or trigger something in them because the feeling of freedom that I have now I want others to share.”
