Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is said to be favourable to the club’s players taking a pay cut to help balance the books during the coronavirus crisis.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have reportedly suffered significant losses since the suspension of the Ligue 1 and other football events because a lot of their revenue stream stems from TV rights.

According to French sports magazine L’Equipe, the wealthy Qatari businessmen, who has been the president and chief executive officer of PSG since October 2011, wants to copy FC Barcelona and attempt to lower player salaries.

He reportedly made the comments during a telephone meeting that took place on Monday between the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs.

PSG paid out 371 million EUR (342.6 million GBP) in employee salaries from a total budget of 637 million EUR (588.3 million GBP) in 2018-2019, so some 60 percent of its total budget, still according to L’Equipe.

FC Barcelona, in comparison, reportedly pay out roughly 70 percent of their total budget in salaries.

The PSG bosses reportedly have two options: to negotiate directly with their players for them to accept a salary cut, or wait for a common decision between Ligue 1 clubs that would lower all player salaries across the board.

Other big European clubs have already implemented pay cuts, such as Bayern Munich whose members accepted a 20 percent cut. Monchengladbach, Werder Bremen and Schalke 04 have also reportedly accepted cuts.
