This is the moment a young man plummets through an open grate in the floor while absorbed on his phone and the lucky fellow ends up landing on a tall stack of boxes.

The incident was filmed in the district of Fatih in the north-western Turkish city of Istanbul on 14th February.

According to the news site Yeni Safak, local shop worker Abdullah Mut, 19, was reading messages on his phone while he was walking along the corridor and plummeted through the open grate in the floor.

At the time, several deliverymen were unloading boxes into the basement where the teen plummeted.

Luckily for the young man, his fall was broken by a tall stack of boxes that he miraculously found himself sitting on top of.

His first questions to stunned workers in the basement who came across him were: “Why is this open? Where are my glasses?”

Abdullah said afterwards: “I don’t know how it happened. I had my phone in my hand and I was busy with work at that moment.

“I didn’t see it and I fell down. By chance, I landed on a stack of boxes. They were unloading goods that day. Then I went back to my office.”

One shop owner in the arcade said: “He suddenly fell and ended up sitting on the boxes. If he had fallen the whole way, he would have at least broken his arms and legs.”
