These are the ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of a teen whose boyfriend beat her so brutally that he disfigured her face, rendering her unrecognisable.

Gustavo Duarte de Campos, 21, repeatedly punched and kicked his teen girlfriend in the municipality of Nova Canaa do Norte, in the west-central Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, on the night of 9th November.

The emergency services were called by a resident who saw a badly hurt and bloodied woman staggering in the street. The police arrived at the scene, where they found the young woman with a swollen mouth and eyes and numerous bruises. They took her to hospital, where she received stitches to her face.

The young woman, whose initials have been given as ELF, was reported to still be in hospital on 13th November, where she was awaiting a transfer to a health unit in the state capital of Cuiaba, 470 kilometres (292 miles) away, to undergo surgery.

When the victim was rescued by the police, she informed them that she had been attacked by her partner, who then ran away. However, she was unable to remember what had motivated the attack.

The young man was reported still at large on 13th November. His lawyer had informed the Brazilian justice that he would hand himself in the day before. However, he did not do so, and he is believed to be in hiding in the nearby municipality of Paranaita.

Campos’ lawyer has subsequently informed the justice system that his client will hand himself in on a later date.
