A 28-year-old woman has been arrested for selling her two-year-old daughter for GBP 180.
Erika Janeth is accused of putting her child up for illegal adoption in the neighbourhood of Santa Cruz in the municipality of in Valle De Chalco in the Mexican state of Mexico on 23rd September.
She reportedly took her daughter, two years and seven months old, to Santa Cruz to meet a buyer who paid MXN 5,000 (GBP 180) for the girl and her birth certificate, according to the news site Proceso.
However, the girl’s relatives reported her disappearance to the authorities and she was found days later in the area of Ixtapaluca on 23rd September.
The girl’s father confirmed her identity and she was later transferred to the public ministry to be medically certified.
Meanwhile, the girl’s mother has been arrested for giving the child up for illegal adoption.
The suspect is being held in custody as the investigation continues.
