A man and a teenager have been arrested by police in Germany over an alleged sex attack on a 12-year-old girl.

Police are investigating the possibility that the young girl was raped by the men.

Two men aged 16 and 32 and originally from Syria are accused of sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl in an apartment in Stralsund, a Hanseatic town in the Pomeranian part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

The 16-year-old was arrested shortly after the incident was reported to police but the 32-year-old suspect went on the run and only turned himself in to police in Essen in the German province of North-Rhine Westphalia days later after a picture of him was released by cops in an attempt to track him down.

According to police the incident happened last Tuesday in one of the men`s apartments.

Police spokesperson Claudia Tupeit said: “It is not known to what extent the suspects took advantage of the young girl and whether she was raped, this is currently subject of our investigation.”

Police confirmed the victim was a young girl from the Stralsund area but did not release any further information in order to protect the young victim as is the norm for cases involving sexual violence and underage victims.

Following the arrest of the second man, German police also removed his photo from the press release under Germany`s strict privacy laws.

Both men are being held in police custody and investigations continue.
