Several protests against President Sebastian Pinera’s government took place this week during the 2020 Vina del Mar International Song Festival, which has been held in the city every February since 1960.

The recent wave of violence reportedly led to the arrest of 24 protesters while several buildings, including the historic Hotel O’Higgins, suffered arson attacks.

The unrest was sparked by announced travel price hikes, but soon descended into ongoing anti-government protests about rising inequality in the South American country.
