A Turkish startup has developed a cash machine module which it says eliminates the coronavirus and other bacteria from banknotes using ultra-violet light.

Turkish start-up Money Shower said they have created the module with “instant disinfection technology” and claim it can help stop the spread of coronavirus, officially name COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The company’s co-founder Furkan Erucan said the module, which uses ultraviolet UVC light to eliminate viruses and bacteria, makes all cash machines “hygienic and environmentally friendly in 15 minutes.”

He said that “There are now 26,000 bacteria of 500 types on average on banknotes circulating in Europe. These numbers are enough to make people sick.”

The founder added that China is currently burning paper money which had been circulating the market to prevent the spread of COVID-19, saying that the module his company created could replace this “quite inadequate” disinfection method.

Experts report that banknotes do carry a risk of COVID-19 transmission and advised citizens to wash their hands after handling cash.

Erucan said that the Money Shower currently sell “to one of Turkey’s leading banks” and they aim to integrate the module into major banks by 2023 after pilot trials.
