A 13-year-old boy accused of shooting a classmate dead while they played video games has been seized by police.
Suspect Laquan Rich-Cabbagestalk was remanded in custody on 17th January, charged with criminal homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor.
The shooting took place at a home in Clairton, Pennsylvania, USA the previous night.
By the time police and paramedics arrived on the scene, the victim – named as Chase Jones, 13 – had already died from head injuries.
Two teenage witnesses told police they were playing on a PlayStation console while Rich-Cabbagestalk and Chase were on the bed behind them.
They then heard a loud noise and turned around to see Rich-Cabbagestalk wielding a gun.
He then allegedly said: “I shot him. I’m sorry.”
He then allegedly fled from the home into an alleyway while one of the two teenagers pursued him and the other called emergency services.
Police later recovered a 9mm handgun and magazine from the alleyway.
Rich-Cabbagestalk turned himself in to police the next morning.
Both he and the victim were students at Clairton Middle/High School.
In a statement obtained by Newsflash, Allegheny County Police Department said: “On Monday, January 16, 2023, at approximately 9:19 p.m., Clairton Police and paramedics were called to the 400 block of Wilson Avenue for a teenage male shot inside a residence. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Detectives from the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Through the investigation, it was determined 13-year-old Laquan Rich-Cabbagestalk was the one responsible for the shooting.
“An arrest warrant was issued and Rich-Cabbagestalk turned himself in to Allegheny County Police this morning. He is currently housed in the Allegheny County Jail awaiting arraignment. Rich-Cabbagestalk is charged with criminal homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor.”
