This is the moment a shopper breaks his hip and cuts himself on the backside when he accidentally falls down an escalator’s open service hatch.

Shopper Wang Gang, 45, was taken to hospital for the fracture and several lacerations following the accident in the city of Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province, on 8th October.

Mr Wang was in basement level 1 of the Kangshi Shopping Plaza, where he had gone for a haircut, when he walked towards the escalators to leave.

CCTV footage of the incident shows another male shopper walking ahead of him and stepping over the access hatch.

But Mr Wang fails to notice the gaping hole and plunges straight down the service well.

Mr Wang recalled: “I was walking and didn’t see it. I fell straight down and cut myself on my backside, chest and leg.”

He was diagnosed with a minor hip fracture and is now on bed rest.

Mr Wang and his family said the shopping centre, whose staff were doing waterproofing work on the escalators at the time, had paid for a portion of his medical bills.

But they are demanding that the business compensate him further for time taken off work.

Talks are still ongoing, reports said.
