Russian Father Christmas has invited teen climate activist Greta Thunberg to visit his icy residence over the festive period.

Ded Moroz or Father Frost, the Slavic version of Santa Claus, made the statement during a press conference when he said: “Why not invite Greta? I am also an avid environmental activist and I have artificial trees at home. Every time I see real Christmas trees being thrown away, my heart sinks.”

Father Frost, who also said that he wears fake fur, invited the 16-year-old Swedish activist to his residence in the town Veliky Ustyug in the north-western Russian region of Vologda Oblast.

It is currently unclear whether Thunberg, who was recently named Time magazine’s person of the year, will take up the Russian Santa on his offer.

Thunberg first became known for her activism in August 2018 when she began spending school days outside the Swedish parliament to call for tougher action on what she describes as a climate crisis.

Outside the parliament building, she held up a sign saying: “School strike for the climate.”

The incident later grew into a global movement called School Strike for the Climate, also known as Fridays for Future.

The teen activist believes that the planet is facing an existential crisis due to climate change, that the current generation of adults is responsible for the situation, that climate change will have a huge effect on young people, and that too little is being done about the situation by world leaders.
