Brazilian legend Ronaldinho has said Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is “the best of his time” but he “cannot call him the best in history”.

The comments came during an exhibition match at the Morelos Centenarian Stadium located in the city of Cuernavaca in the state of Morelos in southern Mexico.

The Brazilian superstar recently signed a contract to play exhibition matches around Mexico for charity events.

During the exhibition match in Cuernavaca, Ronaldinho spoke with local media and praised Messi’s record sixth Ballon d’Or saying: “I am very happy for Messi because he is a friend of mine and he has been an icon in Barcelona.”

However, when asked if the Argentine superstar’s latest achievement places him as the best in history Ronaldinho said: “I do not like to make comparisons because it is difficult to identify who is the best in history.

“There is Maradona, Pele, Ronaldo (Nazario). I cannot say Messi is the best in history. He is the best of his time.”

The comments come after Messi received his sixth Ballon d’Or award earlier this month giving him one more than Portuguese superstar Ronaldo and marking the most any individual player has received in history.

Ronaldinho and Messi were teammates between the years 2004 and 2008 at Barcelona before Ronaldinho was sold to AC Milan where played alongside British midfielder David Beckham and Brazilian midfielder Kaka.

Ronaldinho won the Ballon d’Or once in the year 2005.
