This is the moment a suspected crook said to be resentful towards rich people sets fire to a brand-new Tesla SUV worth 125,000 GBP.
The suspect surnamed Shi, 32, allegedly bungled a burglary earlier in the day and was looking for a target on which take out his frustrations, according to police in Quanzhou County in China’s southern Guangxi region.
The police were alerted to his alleged crime when one Mr Ni – owner of a brand-new black Tesla Model X – called to say his parked car was ablaze on 29th August.
CCTV images inspected by police show a man – allegedly Shi – walking up to the parked car and lighting it on fire before fleeing.
The fire service put out the fire shortly after, but they were not able to prevent the Tesla from being burned to a crisp, with only a partial frame, its chassis and wheels remaining with which to identify it.
Mr Ni revealed he had recently purchased the apparently kitted out Model X for 1.1 million RMB (125,930 GBP) after tax.
The police who arrested the suspect the following day said Shi harboured “resentment” towards the rich”.
The unemployed man with a prior conviction for assault was reportedly frustrated at having not been able to carry out a successful burglary earlier – and decided to set fire to the Tesla and break its windows “out of resentment and envy for the rich”, the cops added.
