Real Sociedad’s manager has claimed that he would not like to coach Lionel Messi because he would not “fit in with the values and attitude of his club”.

Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil made the comments in an interview with Basque radio program Euskadi Irratia in the city San Sebastian in the Spanish autonomous community Basque Country in northeastern Spain.

Alguacil was with four other Basque La Liga managers as they discussed several aspects of managing a team in Spain’s top flight.

When the managers were asked which player they dream of coaching Eibar manager Jose Luis Mendilibar answered “Messi”. Alguacil had some thoughts on the answer.

He said: “Not for me. My dream would not be Messi. He is an incredible player that does incredible things but I have the impression that due to our values and our attitude he would not fit in here with us in Real Sociedad.”

Algualcil went on to say that “I cannot think of a name” of a dream player to coach as the “values of humility and being humble” are very important at Real Sociedad and “those players surely do not share them”, referring to the biggest stars in football.

The other managers who participated in the programme were Gaizka Garitano (Athletic Bilbao), Asier Garitano (Alaves) and Jagoba Arrasate (Osasuna).

Every club from the Basque Country autonomous community in La Liga has a Basque manager in charge of the team.
