This ultra-Orthodox Israeli rabbi and incoming legislator has claimed that women who do not dress modestly get breast cancer and are “usually reincarnated as a cow”.

Rabbi Baruch Gazahay, 38, who is set to join Israel’s ‘Knesset’ or national legislature, made the comments in a series of YouTube videos on his personal channel which have only just been reported on.

In the videos, which have received over 2 million views in total, Gazahay claims that “a woman who is used to exposing her upper body is usually reincarnated as a cow, because its udder is exposed”.

The rabbi added that: “A woman must be covered. That, by the way, is one of the reasons women get breast cancer. Because everyone’s eyes are upon them, and it gives them the evil eye.”

He also claimed that women posting photos of their pregnant bellies on Facebook is “the reason pregnant women have miscarriages”.

In a different clip, the Ethiopian-born rabbi said that men should ignore women they do not know who try to start conversations with them, adding they should threaten to call the police if they continue.

He also claims that men should not “cry together” with their wives if she is upset about something that happened at work, but should instead be willing to go and attack the person who made her upset with a kitchen knife.

The ultra-orthodox rabbi has also claimed that only “monkeys” could believe in the theory of evolution.

Aryeh Deri, the leader of the Shas political party Gazahay is a member of, said he had spoken to the rabbi to let him know that the remarks were “unacceptable”.

He said Gazahay claimed the remarks were “a few sentences taken out of context” from around four years ago.

However, local media report the rabbi’s YouTube channel has similar videos on it from late 2019.

He is set to join the legislature under the ‘Norwegian Law’ which lets ministers resign from parliament and be replaced by the next person on their party’s electoral slate.

Gazahay moved to Israel as a young child and became religious as an adult. He is married with five children.
