A Navy sailor accused of killing his 21-year-old girlfriend and dumping her body in a river after they watched a World Cup match together has been seized by police in Argentina.
Jorge Rojas, 23, and Yoselie Agustina Herrera Nadal had watched Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 with a group of friends on 26th November before the brutal killing.
But the alarm was raised whenYoselie – also in the Navy – later failed to turn up for work at the Comandante Espora Naval Air Base in Buenos Aires Province.
Rojas later turned himself in to police and reportedly confessed to the killing and told police where to find the body.
Police chief Gonzalo Bezos said: “We worked with several witnesses, such as her superiors, friends, her co-workers and, mainly, the last people who were with her.
“The last person who was with her is her boyfriend, who we spoke to the most.”
A search operation was launched on the evening of 29th November before the young woman’s body was finally found early the following morning near the Naposta stream, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) northeast of Bahia Blanca.
The victim’s aunt – named only as Lorena – told local media: “We are devastated, appalled, but honestly we knew very little.
“At the end of July, she came to Guaymallen some time ago along with Rojas and introduced him as a friend of hers.
“The feeling he gave was of a submissive person. He did not give the feeling that he would later become the murderer of my niece.”
She added: “She told her cousins that she was dating this person. She was a very outgoing girl and this man did not like that trait of her personality, like all psychopaths, a toxic man.
“We didn’t know that they shared an apartment and that they were going to spend the weekends together. We believed that he lived on the Base.”
Lorena also said that her colleagues had revealed that Rojas mistreated Yoselie.
She said; “Yoseli was a bulldozer, with a very strong character, she stood up to everyone. If Rojas killed her, he must have got up really early because my niece was capable of facing anyone.
“She had already mentioned that she couldn’t take it anymore because he was very obsessive, controlling and toxic. I think this last discussion could have led to him acting like every psychopath who couldn’t stand the decision [to leave].”
Lorena also said that Rojas has a restraining order against him from a previous partner that prohibits him from seeing his son.
She added: “That raised some red flags for us, but his innocent face made us think that he would not hurt a fly.”
The investigation is ongoing.
