Former Tottenham Hotspur star Kevin-Prince Boateng has criticised football saying it “is a business and players are just numbers” explaining that the modern game “provokes depression”.
The comments came from Boateng, 32, during an interview with German tabloid newspaper ‘Bild’ where he shared his thoughts on football today.
When asked about what worries him the most in today’s football, Fiorentina forward Boateng said: “Football is business and players are just numbers.
“If you do not perform, you will be replaced. It is that simple. There is no loyalty and that is sad.”
Boateng went on to say: “We should do a survey to find out which footballers still enjoy training and playing the game. It is a job for professionals.
“The pressure is enormous and provokes depression” admitting that when he plays “there are times I have fun and there are times when I do not.”
When speaking about young players and their talent Boateng said: “They do not work on their talent.
“Some drive their Mercedes at 19 years of age and they think themselves to be so talented that they do nothing to improve. No extra training, nothing. I think football has changed, just like society.”
Boateng was bought by Italian side Fiorentina in this summer’s transfer window and has made 13 appearances, scoring one goal.
