Further pieces of footage show the carnage in the wake of the attack, with the dead and injured lying on the blood-spattered restaurant floor.

The attack took place in the coastal resort village of Montanita on the night of 20th May.

According to reports, several individuals arrived at the grill restaurant on foot and opened fire at the diners inside.

Witnesses reported hearing more than 50 gunshots.

Two of the fatal victims have been identified as married couple Haminton and Gemary Zambrano.

Germary – a 31-year-old psychologist from Chone – was pregnant with the couple’s second child, according to local media. Haminton, 32, was a teacher.

The couple were celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary when the bloodbath took place.

The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office tweeted: “The Prosecutor’s Office has initiated, ex officio, a preliminary investigation into an armed attack at a food establishment in Montanita, which resulted in the death of six people and left six others injured. The bodies have been recovered, and evidence has been collected.

“Among the evidence found are: spent firearm cartridges, three mobile phones, and controlled substances (yet to be quantified). Requests have been made to extract information from security cameras in order to try to identify those responsible.”

According to reports, the victims were taken to hospitals in people’s cars and even in the back of police patrol vehicles due to a lack of ambulances.

Two died in hospital after being admitted in critical condition.

At the time of reporting, three of the fatal victims had been identified.

The third has been named as Jefferson Santa Lopez, also known as “Morro”. Local media say he was a member of the narco-gang “Los Aguilas”.

The gang’s alleged leader – Junior Roldan, also known as “J.R.” – was recently killed at a party in a rural part of Colombia.

Morro reportedly had a criminal record for homicide, murder, and receiving stolen property.

One of the injured has reportedly been arrested in the past for murder.
