This is the moment a police patrol vehicle slams into a hapless pooch crossing the road and sends the dog flying before leaving the scene.

The shocking incident was recorded by a CCTV camera in the neighbourhood of Mandalay, in the municipality of Kennedy, in the Colombian capital Bogota.

In the video, two women can be seen crossing the road as a police van approaches them at high speed.

A dog on the pavement then runs across the road in front of the vehicle, giving the driver no time to stop and the poor pooch is sent flying across the tarmac in the collision.

One of the women goes running towards the dog which was reportedly sent around 100 metres down the road and local media report the driver of the police van did not stop to check on the dog.

Netizen ‘Ivan Valbuena’ says he is a friend of the owner of the dog, named Laika, and claims the dog ran away from the scene in a panic.

Laika was missing for two days before its owners found it in the Timiza neighbourhood with a serious hip injury.

The owners, who have not been named, reportedly cannot afford to pay for tests to check if Laika suffered internal injuries in the incident.

Hoover Penilla, Commander of the local police, told the dog’s owner an investigation had been launched into the incident and local media report the metropolitan police of Bogota have ordered a disciplinary investigation against the cop who was driving the patrol car during the incident.
