Police are investigating this viral video – seen nearly 20 million times – showing a kneeling schoolgirl being repeatedly slapped allegedly by two school bullies.

The clips, which appear to show at least two instances of the girl being bullied, were leaked online on 30th October and quickly went viral on social media sites.

The girl wearing the uniform of Zaojiao Middle School, from the city of Tianshui in north-western China’s Gansu Province, is seen kneeling in front of two girls who insult her and slap her on the face.

The girl puts her hands behind her back and does not appear to retaliate, and the same appears to play out in a second scene showing her repeatedly slapped on one cheek by one girl while the same girl films the bullying.

Education bureau officials in Tianshui’s Qinzhou District said they began investigating as soon as the video was seen online.

In a statement on 31st October, officials said they had suspended the school’s principal.

The girl was in stable condition, officials said, but investigations into the suspected bullying continues.

According to reports, the girl lives in the school dormitory together with her bullies.

They are among thousands of so-called ‘left behind’ children whose parents live and work in larger cities for more pay, supporting their families and kids by sending money home.
