The incredible birth was witnessed by farmer Ernani Funini, who welcomed the offspring at his farm in the municipality of Faxinal dos Guedes, in southern Brazil on 27th March.

The marathon birth reportedly began at around 9:50 am and ended at 2:30 pm.

Excited Ernani later told local media that his pigpen has recorded an increase in births over the past few years, but a litter this large is rare.

The maximum number of newborn pigs to a single mum at his farm was usually around 24, he said.

Ernani added: “Due to the large number of piglets, we had to place some of them to suckle with other sows.”

Department of Agriculture vet Rodrigo Lanzarini said that the birth is the result of genetic improvements, nutrition, living conditions and the sow’s strength.

According to the vet, an average birth is usually 12 to 14 piglets.

The vet added: “It is a great result for Granja Dal Bo [the farm] and also for us, as a municipality, it is a source of pride that it happened right here in our community.

“We are very happy.”
