Hundreds Of Birds Plummet From Sky And Die In Bali Cemetery

This is the moment a stunned resident films the bodies of hundreds of sparrows on the ground after they reportedly fell en-masse from the sky over the holiday island of Bali.

The dead birds fell and landed in a cemetery in the regency of Gianyar in the Indonesian island of Bali on 9th September.

The local authorities initially said the incident was probably caused naturally, suggesting extreme weather was to blame, even acid rain. However, a follow-up statement today said pesticides were the cause.

The birds, reportedly sparrows, plummeted from the sky on Thursday morning after it had been raining heavily.

After the birds had been found dead in the cemetery, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) said it was the first time such an incident has ever happened in the region, adding: “If we’re talking about the condition and natural events, it can be said that there was a lot of acid during the rain. It’s possible that that caused the birds to fall.”

Meanwhile, Made Santiarka, spokesperson for the animal health department in Gianyar Regency, also said the sparrows were probably killed by extreme weather.

However, on 10th September, it was reported that BKSDA said the birds died of poisoning from pesticides typically used in the area.

It is unclear if the investigation is still ongoing.
