Female PETA protesters have stripped down to their undies and painted their bodies in two colours to protest the ongoing confinement of zoo animals crammed into small cages in a Thai shopping centre.
Supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) carried out the protest in the central Thai capital Bangkok where over 200 species of animals are showcased in Pata Zoo, located on the sixth and seventh floors of the shopping centre of the same name.
PETA Asia singled out the owner for continually resisting calls to close the “inhumane” zoo.
PETA spokesman Jason Baker said in a statement: “Kanit Sermsirimongkol, Pata Zoo’s owner, needs to wake up and realise that there’s nothing entertaining about seeing animals suffering in decrepit conditions behind bars.
“If he cared more about animals than pride and profit, he would allow them to be transferred to sanctuaries, something that PETA has offered to help with multiple times.”
Pata Zoo is reportedly home to over 200 species of animals, including pythons, turtles, monkeys, leopards, tigers, bears and a dozen penguins.
The face of the campaign to close the zoo has long been Bua Noi, a gorilla who has been confined in a concrete enclosure in the shopping centre zoo since 1988.
Five years ago, activist Sinjira Apaitan led a campaign to stop the local authorities from renewing Pata’s operating licence, however nothing happened and the zoo’s license was rubber stamped.
