In the video taken on 7th October at Dafu Harbor in Liuqiu, an outlying island off the coast of Taiwan’s southern county of Pingtung, Mr Hung’s small scooter flies forwards for a moment before plunging into the sea.

Moments later, the pensioner is seen desperately swimming for land as his scooter sinks below the water’s surface.

He was rescued by a duty coastguard who the footage shows jumping into the sea after him.

He was helped back onto the pier a few minutes later.

According to reports, Mr Hung was shaken by the accident but suffered no serious injuries.

It was unclear at the time of writing whether his scooter, which reports say has been written off due to being submerged in seawater, had been retrieved.
