A Nigerian man has been jailed in Austria for transporting over two kilogrammes of cocaine and heroin with a street value of EUR 500,000 in his body.
According to Lower Austria’s regional police department, the 45-year-old man was captured with 214 containers of cocaine and heroin in his body when he was stopped at Vienna International Airport in Austria.
A police spokesman stated on Monday that the smuggler was sentenced to four years in prison by the Regional Court of the town of Korneuburg.
The Nigerian man was arrested on 19th September 2020 during a joint examination by the Lower Austria Police and the airport customs team.
The man, who initially claimed he travelled to Brussels for the purpose of leisure, got caught up in his statements’ contradictions during the questioning, according to the police.
He was subjected to a CT scan in a local hospital at the investigators’ request, which only confirmed their initial suspicions.
By order of the Korneuburg Public Prosecutor’s Office, the man was immediately arrested and taken to the Vienna-Josefstadt prison.
The police managed to seize 1, 905 grams of cocaine and 200 grams of heroin, packed in 214 containers. It reportedly took the suspect three days to ingest all of the 10-gram containers.
Additionally, the police found out that the man took a total of 29 flights to Austria, however he did not confess to smuggling anything else on the other trips.
