An 11-year-old Malaysian girl has taken on the responsibility of ‘mother’ to her four siblings after their parents were jailed for drugs offences.

Nurul Farisha Mohd Ridzuan, 11, cares for her siblings, aged 12, six, three and one, at their home in Kubang Terap in the Malaysian state of Kelantan.

Little Nurul shoulders her mother’s duties when her grandmother leaves the house to sell massage oils door-to-door between 9am and 6pm most days.

The young girl has to care for her toddler brother while watching the other kids and cooking their meals on a wood stove because they do not have the money for gas, according to local media.

Reports said the tot even has to drink concentrated milk as they cannot afford to buy baby formula.

After her parents were both jailed for drugs offences, Nurul and her 12-year-old brother have to shoulder their responsibilities.

Nurul told local media: “We live with our grandparents, but our grandfather (Fauzi Ismail, 63) has chronic asthma and is always unwell, and our grandmother (Wan Hasiah Wan Aziz, 56) goes out to earn money for our family.”

According to reports, the family situation has also meant that the children have been kept out of school for two years after moving to Kelantan from the Malaysian city of Seremban.

Nurul admitted: “I am not very good at reading and writing, but my eldest brother can. We really do hope to go to school, but our lives are not like other people.”

Netizens have called on the local authorities to step in and assist the family, however there have been no further updates on any offers of help.
