According to reports, the toddler was viciously beaten over the head with a large rock before being suffocated.

His body was then thrown into the Rio Grande (Big River) where it was carried for 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) before it was discovered the following day (20 March).

Two witnesses claimed to have seen Gomez leaving her home carrying a bundle covered with a blanket on the day of the incident.

A call to a local taxi company asking for an immediate car was among the evidence used to convict the defendant.

Gomez took the stand for around 30 minutes where she maintained her innocence while making contradictory claims in hope of securing a more favourable verdict, according to local media.

The defendant reportedly showed no mercy for her actions and only appeared upset at the thought of spending so many years behind bars.
