A man in Brazil has been sentenced to 24 years and four months in prison for shooting his wife dead at a water park in front of their young children.
Joao Fernando Nedopetalski, 38, was convicted of homicide and the attempted murder of the victim’s brother on 10th December.
Ivanilda Kanarski was shot dead at a water park in the municipality of Irati in the southern Brazilian state of Parana on 26th July 2018.
The 30-year-old was playing with her children, aged 12 and seven, when her husband arrived by car and started shooting at her with a pistol.
The mother was rushed to hospital after being hit by two bullets, one in the chest and another in the shoulder, but later died of her wounds.
The victim’s brother, who was with the family at the water park, tried to subdue Nedopetalski, according to the police.
An off-duty policeman who was at the park heard the shots and managed to arrest the suspect as he was fighting with the victim’s brother.
Nedopetalski was later placed in preventive detention.
He revealed on 10th December that he had been separated from his wife because she was in a relationship with someone else.
He also told the court that he intended to take his children with him to the state capital Curitiba, but Kanarski was against it.
He said he shot his wife during an argument about the matter.
Lawyers representing Kanarski’s family said the sentence should be increased.
