This is the moment a hapless mum drives through her city while her toddler son plays in the boot with the lid wide open.

The woman’s red hatchback, which had its boot swung wide open, was pictured weaving through Renhe District in the city of Panzhihua, which is in south-western China’s Sichuan Province.

Footage dated 17th June shows the little red car turning through a junction with the boot door completely open and the interior of the vehicle exposed.

The woman’s three-year-old son can be seen sitting in the boot and playing by himself, unaware that he could have fallen onto the road had his mum accelerated too quickly.

Fortunately, the child was not harmed, and local authorities summoned the mum and her boy the following day.

She explained that she was taking her son to the park and left him sitting in the back seat.

She only noticed her boot door was open after she had arrived.

The parent said: “I checked to see that all the doors were closed before driving off, but maybe the boot wasn’t shut properly.

“When I arrived, I saw my son sitting quietly in the back seat. I don’t know how it happened.”

Reports suggested the boy is likely to have climbed into the boot and pushed the door open, but it is still unclear when or how this happened.

The mum was given a verbal warning and released without charge.
